This munchies joint specializes in creative Colombian hot dogs. Hot dogs such as the Mas Perfecto are topped with cubes of thick bacon, quail eggs and apple chipotle slaw. Paying homage to its South American roots, the Chimi-Churo-Chori dog is topped with delicious homemade chimchurri, rich chorizo, cheese, and crushed potato chips. All the hot dogs are served on warm toasted buns that taste a whoe lot better than what you get at your family Fourth of July barbecue.
Other toppings to choose from include Kraft mac n’ cheese, Doritos, salsa, chile and other foods that come recommended by your doctor for a low-cholesterol diet. If you’re really health conscious, you’ll go for the El Perro Perdido, a hot dog which comes wrapped in a deep-fried French Toast bun, topped with breakfast goodies such as ham and Strawberry Ancho jam.
I enjoyed my meal at 4 pm on a Monday, when they have a 2-for-1 special. I got two dogs with a generous amount of toppings, and two of these beasts were definitely enough to keep me full the rest of the evening. The bill came out to be eight bucks. Individually, however, the hot dogs are a bit expensive (they range from about $4-$8 each, depending on how ridiculous your hot dog is).
Los Perros Locos also offers some Colombian dishes, burgers, chicken and sides, but I only sampled the hot dogs. Being a fairly new establishment, they are always adding new drink and food deals other days of the week, so call them up when you want to find a bargain.
The friendly owner, Alex, whom I had a nice chat with, definitely knows his customers. Though I ate at 4 pm, the place is open until 1 am Sunday-Wednesday, 3 am on Thursday and until 4 am on Friday and Saturday. This is definitely some damn good food after a few too many cervezas, and the place can get packed late at night. Come sober, come drunk, but don’t come on a first date, unless you think feeding each other giant salsa-covered hot dogs is a form of foreplay.
Los Perros Locos is located in the Lower East side on 201 Allen Street, right off of Houston. In case you’re too toasty to get off the couch, they also deliver. Check out the Los Perros Locos website.
